Sometimes a painting seems to have a life of its own. I have been working on a painting of the Tropical House in Madeira for three years. When I say working on I really mean I have had it in the studio. It often looked at me from the wall and said that it wasn’t’ the finished and that I should consider it more closely. Some of you may have noticed it on this website. Well I did take it down and over the course of a week and several intense sessions it has changed completely. It now fits in with the current paintings of quarries and other elemental surfaces of water, earth and fire. I often reconsider previous work as the initial surface is laid down and I can add on to it with more texture and impasto paint.
